Woodbridge Senior Softball World Series bound after defeating Laurel
Woodbridge's Senior League Softball All-Stars earned a trip to the World Series when they knocked off defending world champ Laurel 3-2. Sussex County Post/Jeff Mitchell

ROXANA - Hailey Andrews and her Woodbridge Senior League All-Star teammates have played a long time together, whether it is in Little League, travel ball or on the school's softball team.

Throughout that time, however, one of the thorns in their side has been Laurel.

Last week in Roxana with a trip to the Senior Softball World Series on the line, Woodbridge finally removed the thorn with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over its rival to earn the Series' District III host automatic berth.

The World Series begins on Aug. 5.

Before Woodbridge's newly-acquired berth, Laurel, the defending Senior Softball World Series champion, had represented District III all but once since the event came to the Lower Sussex Little League Complex in Roxana nine years ago.

"We finally beat Laurel," Andrews said as joyful tears ran down her cheeks. "That definitely makes it even better."

Andrews, the game's winning pitcher, also scored the game-winning run in the fifth on a RBI groundout after she doubled in a pair of scores.

More on the game will be in the Wednesday, July 25, print edition of the Sussex County Post.
