ROXANA - Every summer hundreds of thousands of Little League All-Stars all share a common goal.
Those who play well enough during the season to earn that coveted All-Star spot just want to keep winning tournaments and advancing, eventually making it to one of eight different Little League World Series.
One of those eight is played right here in Delaware at the Lower Sussex Little League Complex in Roxana. There, from Aug. 5-11, 10 teams from different parts of the United States and the world will compete for the chance to be a Senior League Softball World Series champion.
The championship game, played on the 11th at noon, will be broadcast live on ESPN.
"As far as I know, all 10 teams will be there," said Senior Softball World Series Coordinator Martin Donovan. "We have a full field."
Included in that field will be whichever team comes out of the Delaware District III tournament. As the host, District III has seen several successes since the Series came to Roxana, but none more than witnessed last year.
Coming out of Laurel, which has happened all but once since District III got the auto berth, the local representatives went out and won the entire event.
"They had a great run last year," Donovan said of Laurel. "(The team) represented the district well."
With just about a month remaining between now and when the teams converge in southeast Delaware, Donovan said he and his staff are working on final preparations to for tourney.
As Little League is a volunteer-based organization, the World Series is always looking for help.
"It's not just (man power) we need, anything you think you can donate to help us, let us know," Donovan said. "There's a lot of things people don't even think about that we could use."
And, of course, the series can always use more money, whether it comes from donations or by purchasing an ad in the event's program guide.
"This thing isn't cheap to host," Donovan said. "But it's worth it when you see all these girls coming together and having a great time."
