STATEWIDE -- Henlopen Conference champion Sussex Tech held on to defeat Delaware Military Academy 4-2, as the baseball state tournament - as well as the girls' soccer playoffs - swung into action Tuesday night.
The No. 3 seed Ravens, with the win, advanced to Thursday's second round bout against A.I. DuPont. The No. 11 Tigers advanced by upsetting No. 7 Hodgson 7-0. The game will be at Sussex Tech at 4 p.m.
Woodbridge baseball, which made its first state tournament appearance in more than a decade and a half, plated a pair of seventh inning runs against No. 2 St. Mark's but fell short of an upset, falling 4-2. The 15-seed Blue Raiders got two hits from Justin Hignutt and finished with just three as a team.
Milford, possibly under-seeded at No. 13, had little trouble with No. 4 Caesar Rodney, as the Buccaneers cruised to an 11-1 victory. More on that game can be found here. The Bucs will now tackle No. 12 Red Lion - upset winners over No. 5 Salesianum, 9-8 - Thursday, 1 p.m., at Caravel.
On the girls' soccer field, the Lady Ravens of Sussex Tech earned their program its first ever playoff win, 1-0 over No. 8 Newark. Tech, the nine-seed, got a goal from freshman Michelle Laz in the 58th minute then held on for the victory. Tech will play again Saturday.
