Rick, You do know if Kent County started its own Animal Control Program and Shelter! The beginning investment taxpayers out-lay would have to be I would imagine at least $2-Million in taxpayers money! Secure a suitable size building that could handle serves the needs of all of Kent County and out-fit it properly! Purchase at least 3-4 Pick-up Trucks and out-fit them with mobile radios and cages. Plus I figure hire at least a staff of 5-7 persons to man said shelter and act as Patrol Animal Control Officers. Figure the Kent County Levy Court could negociate with Kent County Vet Clinics on a annual contract to provide Vet Services? But even if we got off with $2-$3-Million the first year in start-up expenses. I could easly see ongoing annual expenses easily of $1.5-Million per year!!!! So our Levy Court Commissiors have to weigh the cost of starting our own Kent County Government Animal Shelter and Animal Control Program verus a NEW negociated contract with the Kent County SPCA???

Good point, Harry. In addition to start-upcosts, we'd now have the more generously paid and pension-eligibleCountyemployees becoming a permanent ongoing cost to the taxpayers. Additionally, ever time some lady from Hartly came to a Levy Court meeting complaining about how Fluffy was treated by the County when it ended up in the Animal Control Center, you'd have 7 Commissioners tryiing to be nice guys and 'fix' the problem instead of doing something worthy of those salaries we pay them. Next , you'd have all the developer lawyers suing the County for animal control issues because they need another route to the taxpayers pockets now. It's just not a good idea to become the bearer of this torch, no matter how noble it might seem now.

Plus Veritas, Ya'll know if we start a Kent County Animal Shelter and Control Program! Hire a staff of say 7-10-Bodies NO doubt they'll quickly seek "UNION" representation??? Then the Jollies for Kent County Tax-payers would truly kick in and with our Kent County Levy Court presently being a Democrat Good Ole' Boy's Club all I can say is "OUCH" please show mercy on our Pocket-books for sure!!!!!!
