President Obama’s wrong turn on energy

Over the past few months, Americans have learned a lot about the Keystone XL tar-sands pipeline – the oil industry's scheme to pad their profits and expand development inCanada's pristine northern forests.

Recently, President Obama announced that his Administration will expedite pipeline permits including the southern leg of Keystone XL, which runs fromOklahomato theGulfCoast.

The decision is both incredibly frustrating, considering Keystone's huge threat to wildlife and public health, and confusing – as it comes after months of White House promises to thoroughly review the project before making any decisions.

Tar-sands pipelines are dirty, dangerous, and inadequately regulated, as proven by catastrophic spills in theKalamazooandYellowstonerivers. Cleanup crews are still struggling to restore those ecosystems.

Keystone XL is just the tip of the iceberg, and Big Oil has big plans for more tar-sands pipelines and more exports. President Obama's wrong turn on pipeline safety will have big consequences for Americans and does nothing to address gas prices or employment.

What really gets me, is the fact that none of the byproducts from these Canadian Tar-sand Oils will ever reach benefit American Energy Consumers period! These Canadian Tar-sand Oils will be merely moved down to the Gulf of Mexico to be loaded on Super-tankers bound for foreign lands. Some of these Canadian Tar-sand Oil's will be refined here down at Gulf of Mexico Refineries then the finished product Gasoline Diesel Fuel and Heating-Oil will be loaded on Super-tankers then exported to foreign lands!!!! End of Story!!!!

But Newt Gingrich says HE can get gas prices down to $2.50 a gallon with a wave of his magic Newty wand. When will we learn that we must explore NEW sources of energy and fuel before it's too late? Conservatives in Congress say it's too exspensive and they don't want to waste money. Apparently they haven't been to the gas station recently . . . . .

Environmentally sustainable food

Just in time for next Sunday’s Earth Day observance, a study published in last week’s “Environmental Research Letters” warns that animal manure and fertilizers used in growing animal feed emit large amounts of nitrous oxide, a powerful greenhouse gas. An op-ed piece in this week’s “The New York Times” warns that the devastating environmental impacts of a meat-based diet are actually magnified when raising animals on the range, because this involves much more land and more greenhouse-gas emissions (www.nytimes.com/2012/04/13/opinion/the-myth-of-sustainable-meat.html?_r=1&emc=eta1).

These conclusions are in keeping with an extensive United Nations Environment Program’s report (www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/jun/02/un-report-meat-free-diet), which drew on dozens of smaller studies. The highly respected report concluded that agricultural production accounts for 70 percent of global freshwater use, 38 percent of land use and 19 percent of greenhouse-gas emissions.

In an environmentally sustainable world, meat and dairy products must be replaced by vegetables, fruits and grains, just as fossil fuels must be replaced by wind, solar and other pollution-free energy sources. As the world’s most conspicuous consumers, we have a special obligation to lead in pursuing an environmentally sustainable lifestyle. Our next trip to the supermarket is a great starting point.
