Women's Rights to Contraceptives and Family Planning

Monday, March 12, 2012 03:01:57 AM by Jo Ann Fields

I am disappointed in Jim Flood Sr.’s opinion piece in the Dover Post 3/7/12 where he talks about a “contraception mandate” in the new health reform law as if insurance coverage for birth control pills is a new idea forced on us by President Obama and the new health reform law.  He also suggests that because there is “strong opinion” about this, then “it must be resolved by the Supreme Court”.

Family planning services, including contraceptives, is a woman’s right firmly fixed in law by Title X [“Population Research and Voluntary Family Planning programs” (Public Law 91-572)] which was enacted in 1970 under President Nixon. President Obama and the new health reform law comply with Title X law.  There is no legitimate legal dispute to take to the Supreme Court.

The Catholic Bishops, Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney, and Rush Limbaugh may have a “strong opinion” against your insurance paying for your birth control pills, but they cannot rob us of our legal rights and send us back in time over forty years.  Women have fought for these rights for decades.  I hope that women across this country work together to resist this attack on our rights to family planning and related preventative health services.  This is an essential health benefit that should be covered by insurance.

The authors in most of the articles about insurance coverage of birth control pills make it look like there are not any insurance company's that cover them, this is false. We have Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia and the PPO insurance does cover birth control pills.

If you check most auto insurance plans you will also discover that not every plan covers everything. The person buying the insurance has the right to decide what they wish to pay for?

In a world where the government (Obamacare) is going to require the coverage of birth control pills wouldn't that mean that even though a person such as a senior citizen or a man who doesn't need birth control pills would be paying for them anyway.

This is not my idea of the American Way.

By the way, Ms Fields, if you want to pay for my auto insurance, I will be more than happy to send you the bill.

Don't we already pay for people to get free condoms?

It is foolish to think that any woman is being deprived of Contraceptives or even abortions today...

I know a few women who have had abortions and every one of them paid for it out of their pocket. Actually their boyfriends paid for them.

As for the pill there are ways for women in poverty to get the pill free.

BUT the pill is not expensive and for $10 a month or $120 a year a woman can pay for them out of her pocket.

HOWEVER I think women really need to examine if the Pill is good for them. There are many warnings that women do not heed when taking the pill ... they smoke and drink and many have family histories of breast cancer. The pill can be very dangerous if taken to reduce flow or suspend menstrual cycles rather then to actually prevent an unwanted child.

If you are not in a committed relationship i suggest you carry a condom because you need to have your partner wear one or you could end up with a disease that is not curable.

AND MY OWN PERSONAL FEELINGS ABOUT THE RELIGIOUS ASPECTS...

What if an employer is Catholic or pro-life and does not want to go against their own beliefs? What if they are not a Church but a small business?

I don't think it is right to force any business to offer abortions or contraceptives for men or women or any other service that they are against religiously...

People always have the right to look for work someplace else or buy their own care.

Or if the care is not so expensive pay for it out of pocket.

On the other hand a $30,000 bill for internal surgery to remove cancer that should probably be covered by all plans.

..

NOW THAT IT HAS PASSED...

Remember that if you could afford the $200 or $400 plan at work you will now be forced to buy the most expensive plan your employer can offer.

Expect to be paying $1,000 a month minimum and if you do not pay it your employer will have to.

WELL NOT SO FAST

Your employer can drop all coverage and give managers or themselves a bonus to cover their cost and make you pay $12,000 a year totally out of your pocket.

And if you only make $20,000 a year and have to pay $12,000 a year... remember this YOU ARE NOT ELEGABLE FOR HELP meaning Medicaid UNLESS YOU MAKE UNDER 100% of the Federal Poverty Rate which is $11,000 a year for a single person.

SO YOU WILL PAY... YOU WILL PAY MUCH MUCH MORE...

Not this year.. not next year but by the end of 2014 prices for heath care will skyrocket..

AND IF YOU ARE NOT UNDER THE FEDERAL POVERTY RATE...

the supreme court says States do not have to add you to Medicaid rolls...

So know what you will do?

You will pay the fine.. but you will not be able to afford the health care plan.. and you will not be able to go on medicaid .. you will be lost in the hole of no coverage and being made to pay a TAX PENALTY …

AND YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY BECAUSE ITS ON YOUR 1040 FORM...

If you want your tax refund .. you will have to pay.. you will have to file..

you will have no coverage
