Marydel man dies in Sunday night crash

MARYDEL - The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred Sunday night at Mahan Corner Road north of Westville Road.

DSP spokesman Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier said the incident occurred around 10:26 p.m. when 31-year-old Shawn M. Bates of Marydel was operating a 1996 Lexus ES300 southbound on Mahan Corner Road. Mr. Bates was attempting to negotiate a left hand curve at an apparent high rate of speed when the Lexus left the west side of the roadway. The vehicle then re-entered the roadway and crossed both lanes of travel before striking a tree on the east side of the roadway.

Mr. Bates, who police said was not properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The roadway was closed for approximately two hours at the crash was investigated and cleared. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.
